Time flies when you're having fun :)

I don't make resolutions for the new year, but I did kind of say to myself that this year I would try harder to keep this blog current. Just over two weeks into the new year and I'm already failing miserably! Maybe this is why I don't make resolutions.

Well, first and foremost, the Mr. and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary last Sunday! It was incredible. We had the whole weekend to ourselves which we filled with all sorts of selfish things that parents of young children can't typically do- like sleeping in late, staying up late, watching rated R movies in the living room without worrying about the volume, not shutting and locking the bedroom door (haha..), having a restaurant dinner for two- no kids menu, movie theater date to see a grown-up movie, and we even had a couple's massage that left us totally relaxed, moisturized, and slant-eyed. We saved the top tier of our wedding cake and a bottle of champagne from our wedding day for our anniversary. I had high hopes for my cake tasting as good as it was a year ago. I had several people tell me that theirs tasted great, but it wasn't the case for mine. I was a bit disappointed, but the champagne didn't fail me. In fact, it was delicious that night, and even more so the next morning in my mimosa... all of them.
It was a wonderful weekend. And I'm so happy that I'm able to say I love him more now than I did a year ago, and I really mean it! We both missed our little dude and were ready for him to come home. Even with all the fun, it just doesn't feel right after too long without him.

Sean has a new schedule which allows him MUCH more time at home. In fact, he's there a lot when we're not! This past week he took on a couple of home projects (one was installing under-cabinet lighting in the kitchen which looks AMAZING!) and even cleaned the fish tank and did some laundry. I could get used to this. I started student-teaching last week. I'm finishing out my last semester of college- I can't taste the end, it's so close! I'm at Carter's school in a classroom down the hall from him. He loves it. He brags to his little friends that his "Mommy's a teacher here!" Not quite, but I'll let him have it. I also got accepted to start my graduate studies this semester. I applied and paid the fees that go with, registered for the first course, and then... I saw that the ONE course cost a $1K. I wasn't worried about the workload at all, but really? A thousand dollars for a single class? Who knew furthering your education would break the bank? I decided to wait and see if I get hired by a school that offers to pay for that sort of thing, or until we have a second income and that type of bill is pocket change, haha, then I'll pursue my Master's. I will get it, it's just a matter of when I start!

I'll leave you with some pictures of male bonding in our house. Hope you have a wonderful week! And happy MLK day :) Enjoy the extra time with your kids!

Ladies and Gentlemen, a new record!

I slept till 10am this morning! Wait, not just me, CARTER slept till 10am this morning- which is the real shocker! It's always blown my mind that regardless of what time I put that child to bed he would always wake up right around 7, most of the time a few minutes earlier. Over this holiday break, however, we've had so much going on and so many new fun games to play that I've let him stay up later than usual and he was sleeping in till 8, which was good enough for me. This morning the phone rang, I ignored it, then the time caught my eye- no way! It was ten o'clock! I shot out of bed to go make sure Carter was still breathing or hadn't been kidnapped, and there he was just walking into my room, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed (I can't believe I just said bright-eyed and bushy-tailed...That's for my dad!)! What a great last Saturday of Christmas break. Beginning tonight we will go to bed early and get back on track for early school mornings starting again next week!

New Year's Eve was as uneventful as ever, except this time we shared it with someone! Sean and I each had a friend over to grill, do fireworks with Carter, play some exciting card games (my idea, haha)- just hang out. The grilling went well- delicious ribs, chicken, and sausage, compliments of Chef Sean and his Christmas grill. But then, for some reason, Sean's friend had to go, leaving my poor friend alone with us from 745 till midnight. Yes, she stayed that long. Actually, we had fun, good conversation, and Sean even got to talk football with her since she's a big fan, so he loved that. We made it to midnight, congratulated each other, then the friend left and we went to bed. Aren't we crazy??

My husband's birthday was yesterday. He has now reached that "quarter-century mark" too, the old man :) A while back we were talking about childhood birthday parties and I brought up my 13th birthday- it was a surprise party in which every single person in the junior high at my school was invited by my parents, and they actually showed up. I don't like surprises and I wouldn't have invited all those people (which is exactly why it was done as a surprise- I was a snobby little 13 year old) and it was just all too much for me. So Sean mentioned he had never had a surprise party, and that is when I determined that oh, he would. So this week I got Sean's mom in on it and we went and got a bunch of football-themed decor- everything from plates and napkins to streamers and cute, little inflatable footballs. I told all the local family and friends to be here at 1pm- seeing as it's New Year's Day, most people would probably have a hard time getting up early, especially traveling, due to the festivities that took place the previous night, so I kept it small. Sean's best friend came and picked him up around noon to go 'shopping,' haha, allowing time to set up and for people to arrive. When Sean got back home with his friend he obviously knew something was going on, but it was still a complete surprise. We did the whole cheesy yelling "Surprise!" as he opened the door. It was great. We grilled hamburgers, hotdogs, had cake and cookie-cake, opened presents... it was everything a 25 year-old's surprise party should be.

Hope your new year is off to a great start!
